Rangers want to speak to Steven Gerrard about their managerial post and their former boss would be open to doing so, according to a report.

The 45-year-old is one the names most prominently being linked with the job in the wake of Russell Martin's sacking on Sunday evening, having been in the running in the summer too.

There were believed to be complications from the fact he was still receiving a tax-free pay-off from Saudi side Al-Ettifaq, and that has been cited as still possibly being an issue.

However, Sky Sports are now reporting that Rangers do want to speak to Gerrard about succeeding Martin and that the Liverpool legend would be interested in holding discussions.

It is claimed it would be premature to label him as their preferred option, but they don want talks as part of their recruitment process.

Gerrard and his family are still based in Bahrain after leaving Al-Ettifaq and he was said in the summer to be happy to stay there.
