Wolves defender Santiago Bueno could be set for a special week with Uruguay. As reported by local outlet Ovación, the centre-back is one of the names Marcelo Bielsa is seriously considering to wear the captain’s armband.

With Uruguay far from home for friendlies against the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan, and several senior players missing, Bielsa is planning changes. He’s looking for a new leader on the pitch. Bueno, 26, seems to fit the bill: calm, reliable, and already well-established in the Premier League.

Since joining Wolves from Girona in 2023, he’s quietly built a solid reputation. He played 34 matches last season, scoring once. Bueno has started this campaign strongly with another goal in four league appearances. His composure on the ball and presence in the air have made him one of Bielsa’s go-to defenders.

Bueno also hit a nice career milestone recently. The defender became one of the ten Uruguayans with the most minutes in Premier League history. With 45 games under his belt, he’s just passed Abel Hernández’s record from his Hull City days.
