Brendan Rodgers has resigned at Celtic and Martin O’Neill has taken over on an interim basis in a dramatic evening for former Leicester City bosses.

It was announced on Monday night that Rodgers had tendered his resignation at Celtic Park and would leave with immediate effect, bringing an early end to his planned three years at the club.

Celtic are currently second in the Scottish Premiership, trailing Hearts by eight points after losing to them at the weekend, while they failed to qualify for the Champions League this season.

O’Neill, a multiple trophy winner with Celtic, has joined alongside Shaun Maloney and will oversee first-team matters for the time being.

But that was only the start of the drama, with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond heavily criticising Rodgers in a follow-up statement.

Desmond acknowledged the part Rodgers had played in Celtic's success in his two spells at the club but added: “I must also express my deep disappointment at the way the past several months have unfolded.
