Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has offered his congratulations to former Rangers colleague Ross Wilson, following his appointment as Newcastle United's new sporting director.

The Magpies have finally completed their lengthy pursuit of a St. James' Park chief after activating his release clause. The appointment sees him transfer across the Premier League from Nottingham Forest to the North East.

Wilson will assume the role which had remained unfilled since Paul Mitchell departed the club in June 2025 through mutual agreement. The new Newcastle backroom chief had previously worked at Rangers and Southampton and will oversee recruitment and sporting strategy after spending two-and-a-half years at Forest.

After his appointment was confirmed, Gerrard shared a supportive message for Wilson on social media. The ex-Reds skipper said: "Congratulations @ross wilson7, great club for you best of luck mate."

Gerrard began his coaching journey at Rangers, where he collaborated with Wilson. Together they won 2020-21 Scottish Premiership without losing a single match.
