Last night Hearts grabbed a last-minute winner against Hibs. It wasn’t vintage, it wasn’t particularly impressive, but it was enough. The interesting part isn’t the result itself but the hysteria it has inspired. The media, already salivating at the prospect of a Hearts title challenge, has gone into overdrive.

Let’s get something straight. They were a minute away from dropping points. If Martin Boyle had held his run a fraction longer, Hibs would have scored and Hearts would probably have lost. Football is about fine margins, and as Celtic are currently proving, you can get by on them for a while, but they don’t last forever.

They are no substitute for proper form.

Hearts are playing better than we are right now—no question—but the margins are small. This is a side already out of the League Cup. This is a side that hasn’t started nearly as strongly as some would have you believe.

What they are doing is putting points on the board, and in football that’s all that matters. Which is why Celtic must go out today and win—because Hearts already have the points and we need to start adding ours.

But I remain dismissive of the idea...
