Matches between ourselves and Southampton have been infrequent affairs down the years, but there have been plenty of memorable away days at the home of the Saints for our supporters to savour.

Whether we made the trip to their current St Mary’s home, or headed to the south-coast for a clash at their old stomping ground of The Dell, we managed to rack up some big scorelines, with some bigger names taking home the matchball after netting a hat-trick.

Southampton 0-4 Arsenal

Five days after becoming our club record signing, Ian Wright continued to make an impression on his new supporters by following up a debut strike at Leicester City in the League Cup with a hat-trick on his First Division bow. It was his shot that led to David Rocastle netting our opener on 39 minutes, and two minutes into the second half the £2.5 million man drilled in his first of the afternoon.

That was quickly doubled when Wright again found himself behind the Saints’ backline and slotted past Tim Flowers, and his dream day was complete on 73 minutes when he gleefully thrashed...
