At 4pm on deadline day, Leicester City had no new signings to show for their January business. Just over 24 hours on and they had four new players in their ranks, making it their busiest winter window in 14 years.

Naturally, there will be some trepidation. From the outside, it may seem like a desperate scramble to get players through the door, and that won’t inspire confidence.

Deadline day is when lots of clubs spur into action, and so City are not alone in working late. And it’s not that good signings can’t be made at the death. City did practically all of their summer business on deadline day too and one of those arrivals, Jordan James, has been their best player this season.

But when signings do come through just before the deadline, or even the day after it, fans are left pondering if there was a plan in place or whether it was simply a mad dash to freshen up the squad.
