When Liverpool spent a then British record £116m to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, you would have been forgiven for thinking Dominik Szoboszlai’s place in the Reds side was under threat. The Hungarian had been Arne Slot’s first-choice at number 10 last season as they won the Premier League title.

The 24-year-old made 49 appearances in all competitions. But while his work rate was never questioned, he faced scrutiny in certain sections for his output in front of goal, as he returned eight goals and eight assists, with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher one of his vocal critics.

Yet despite the arrival of Wirtz, Szoboszlai has emerged as one of the Reds' star players so far this season.
