Newcastle will be looking to bounce back from defeat against Brighton as they face Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The Magpies are reeling after suffering their third loss of the season on Saturday against the Seagulls, losing 2-1 on the South Coast. Newcastle kickstarted their Champions League campaign earlier this month with a 4-0 win away at Union Saint-Gilloise, before losing 2-1 at home to Barcelona in the competition.

Jose Mourinho took charge of Benfica in September and currently has the Eagles third in the Primeira Liga. The ex-Chelsea manager's side head into the tie at St James’ Park off the back of a 2-0 win over second division side Chaves in the Portuguese cup.

Benfica have lost both of their Champions League games so far however, including a 1-0 defeat to Mourinho's former side Chelsea last month.

The Brighton defeat was notable for Eddie Howe's strong reaction in hauling off Anthony Elanga and Joelinton at half time.

After the game, Howe explained his reasoning for the brutal call. "We faded and the last half hour was hard to watch. I don’t think we played well for half an hour of that first half," he said.
