7 Pope: Fine save to keep out Rutter from distance early on. Let down by defence for first goal.

6 Trippier: Solid enough defensive showing from the experienced right-back.

6 Thiaw: First goal a bad from from a Newcastle defensive perspective, but the German made some crucial interceptions.

5 Botman: Was caught out for Brighton’s first goal. Fell well short of recent standards.

7 Burn: Made some crucial interceptions and was unlucky for Brighton’s winner when he made a superb tackle but the loose ball rolled to the feet of Welbeck.

5 Tonali: Switched off for the goal looked exhausted by the time he was replaced in the second half.

6 Bruno: Struggled in the first half but much more effective in the second when Newcastle got a grip.

4 Joelinton: Travels looked to have caught up with the Brazilian, who was off the pace and unusually sloppy in possession. No surprise to see him replaced at half-time.
