BRIGHTON boss Fabian Hurzeler rubbed salt into Newcastle wounds when he admitted he was planning to take Danny Welbeck off before the striker popped up with his second goal and the matchwinner.

Welbeck had continued his fine recent run against the Magpies when he scored the first half opener on Saturday, but after Newcastle levelled through Nick Woltemade's sublime flick it was the visitors who looked the more likely victors.

Hurzeler turned to his bench in a bid to freshen his side up and turn the tide and was planning to withdraw Welbeck - only for the striker to hit the winner.

"To be honest, yes," said Hurzeler, when asked whether Welbeck was about to come off.

"It's important to be honest and that was the case. I was planning to take him off then he surprised me again. Sometimes it's about timing in life and that was good timing."

Welbeck turns 35 this month but remains a hugely important figure for the Seagulls and now has four Premier League goals this season.
