It’s safe to say Jonjo Shelvey’s career has been a rollercoaster ride. From representing England at youth level and earning a big money move to Liverpool, to playing in the third-tier of UAE football aged just 33 years old. Few other players can lay claim to such an up-and-down career.

Shelvey first caught the eye while playing for Charlton Athletic, where he became the club’s youngest-ever player in 2008, aged just 16. Two years later, still as a teenager, the Englishman put pen to paper on a move to Liverpool, where he was tipped to inherit the Reds’ midfield crown from legendary star Steven Gerrard.

Charlton chairman Richard Murray said at the time of the £1.7million deal: "It's with the greatest reluctance that we have accepted an offer for Jonjo from Liverpool. No club likes to lose such a talented prospect, but the overall package is one we couldn't refuse, and one which was very attractive to Jonjo.

"As a club, we have never stood in the way of any of our young players moving to 'bigger' clubs, and this also applies to Jonjo. Liverpool are going to develop...
