Liverpool have found themselves in the firing line in France over their "colossal" summer spending after the Champions League defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Reds were beaten 2-0 at the Parc des Princes in their quarter-final first leg on Wednesday evening to continue a dismal campaign despite a record-breaking £450million of new arrivals in the close season.

Arne Slot's side have won only two of their last eight games in the competitions, were dumped out of the FA Cup in embarrassing fashion at Manchester City on Saturday and face a battle to finish in the top five of the Premier League to secure Champions League qualification.

And new Marseille president Stephane Richard has pointed to Liverpool's "disappointment" of the season on his unveiling on Friday when asked about the ambitions of the French side.
