Former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has candidly admitted that the upcoming World Cup could be the final chapter of his international career.

Once written off by many, Maguire has re-established himself as a vital figure at Old Trafford over the past two years.

He has been in stunning form under head coach Michael Carrick, forcing Thomas Tuchel to select him in the England squad for the two international games last month.

The 33-year-old is “desperate” to be part of the World Cup squad.

He said (via The Sun): “I think it would be my last World Cup for my country. I am desperate to go, whatever role the manager would want me for.

“Whether that’s starting or whether it is deciding games late on. I still believe, even at my age, I am arguably one of the best defenders in the world in both boxes. I don’t think that’s in question, really.”

The United centre-back was one of the very few England players who delivered impressive performances in the recent international break.
