Sunderland can take a close look at Jhon Lucumi this week, as Bologna take on Aston Villa in the UEFA Europa League.

The defender has been a regular for the Italian side this season, playing 36 times in all competitions. He’s had a mixed campaign, but the Colombian will feature on Thursday, with the second leg set to be played next week.

Lucumi put in two key performances against AS Roma in the Round of 16. The second leg went to extra time and the South American lasted the entire tie, playing a major role in a significant win for Vincenzo Italiano’s side.

His start to the season was slow but the centre-back is back to his normal high standards.

Sunderland transfer interest remains

The backdrop for the campaign has been interesting. Sport Witness covered claims from Italy about how keen Sunderland were.

They made an offer to land him but Bologna somehow managed to fight it off, even if Lucumi himself was interested.
