Sunderland have been given a huge boost over the long-term future of the Stadium of Light after the latest development plans emerged.

The Black Cats had previously warned of ‘catastrophic consequences’ over council plans to build housing within 23 metres of their stadium.

Sunderland City Council had proposed last year that 600 homes would be built behind the 49,000-seat venue's South Stand.

However, there were fears that such a move would block any future stadium expansion - as well as inhibit the Stadium of Light's ability to host major events with apartments and townhouses closeby.

Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, who bought the club when they were in League One in 2021 at just 23 years old, spoke out against the plans.

The young tycoon said: “As the custodian of Sunderland AFC, it is my duty to safeguard the future of our club.

“This includes the Stadium of Light – the beating heart of our city.

“Unfortunately, Sunderland City Council has recently taken steps relating to the Sheepfolds development that could have catastrophic operational consequences on our club and, by extension, our community.
