Marco Bizot has taken to Instagram to apologise for the red card he received against Newcastle United in the FA Cup fourth round.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper was shown his marching orders for bringing down Jacob Murphy as the Newcastle winger led a counter-attack at the end of the first half.

Despite being some distance from goal, Bizot rushed out to meet the attacker and fouled him, clearly fearing Villa would otherwise concede.

Tammy Abraham had put Villa ahead in the 14th minute, scoring his first goal since returning to the club.

Sandro Tonali then bagged a brace in the second half before Nick Woltemade rounded off the scoring for the visitors against 10-man Villa.

Bizot has now addressed his error of judgement, posting a message on social media on Wednesday morning.

“I needed a few days to reflect and reset,” he wrote on Instagram.

“I want to apologize for my red card and the impact it had on the team and the fans. I understand that my action put the team in a difficult position.
