The Magpies have been assessing defensive targets this month but Dan Burn is now close to a return to action having resumed training this week.

Howe only wants to add to his squad this month if a player is available who can "elevate the group" and have a long-term future at the club, with the head coach not remotely interested in looking for any quick fixes in the January window.

Howe is also extremely reluctant to make any signings that would then limit Newcastle's business in the summer, an easier window in which to work.

"I am not panicking," said Newcastle's boss.

"That is the worst thing you can do in the transfer market - make rash decisions.

"We have our strategy. PSR is controlling what we are able to do.
