The Magpies have been assessing defensive targets this month but Dan Burn is now close to a return to action having resumed training this week.

Howe only wants to add to his squad this month if a player is available who can "elevate the group" and have a long-term future at the club, with the head coach not remotely interested in looking for any quick fixes in the January window.
