Kris Boyd has hailed the 'genius' decision of Martin O'Neill to play Johnny Kenny through the middle and Daizen Maeda wide left against Rangers.

Celtic youngster Kenny had started at centre forward against both Hearts and Falkirk, scoring in the latter, but with Maeda returning to fitness there was every chance he would be replaced for the big derby semi-final.

However, the Japanese forward was utilised on the left flank with the 22-year-old keeping his place.

Kenny scored the opening goal to set Celtic on their way to the final and generally impressed with his all round performance.

Boyd reckons it was down to the masterstroke decision from the interim boss.

He told the Scottish Sun : “Celtic didn’t really create a lot and got a lead through a fantastic header from Johnny Kenny.

“It’s a great ball in, doesn’t matter what size you are as long as you get across the front of your man, and it’s an unbelievable flick back across. I must say I thought he led the line really well.
