Newcastle United suffered a miserable loss on Sunday, falling to defeat against West Ham to give their new manager their first win of the season - and some fans in the Chronicle Live comments section are holding their own inquest into how the Magpies managed to throw this opportunity against relegation candidates away.

Eddie Howe's side had managed to string together three wins in the Champions League, Premier League and Carabao Cup before heading to London, and Jacob Murphy swept home the opener after four minutes, but West Ham were able to rally themselves.

Lucas Paqueta equalised for the Hammers, and Sven Botman slid home an own goal in the closing moments of the first half. Tomas Soucek added insult to injury late on to cap off a nightmare away fixture.

"I can't really defend our performance," Eddie Howe said in his post-match interview. "We let West Ham back into it with some uncharacteristic errors."
