Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope admits he was left distraught after missing the Carabao Cup final in 2023 due to suspension - but used it as motivation to help lift the trophy two years later.

Pope, in an emotional and honest interview with former England goalkeeper Ben Foster on his Fozcast podcast, revealed he couldn't sleep for days after his red card in the Premier League game against Liverpool a week earlier ruled him out of the showpiece game at Wembley.

Pope charged out of his goal to try and intercept a pass for Mohamed Salah, only to handle the ball after misjudging the bounce. The red card meant he was banned for the cup final and with Martin Dubravka cup-tied, Lloris Karius came in for the game.

Newcastle lost 2-0 to Manchester United to extend their silverware drought, and Pope said it remains one of the worst moments of his career.
