Tottenham’s dreams of going all the way in the Carabao Cup ended abruptly after they crashed out of the competition at the hands of Newcastle United away from home. The Lilywhites were thoroughly outperformed and could not find a way to secure a result at St. James’ Park. The loss against the Magpies also ended the North London club’s hopes of competing on all fronts this season.

Eddie Howe’s men started the game brightly, creating several openings early on. Backup goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was called into action quickly and the Czech international made an early stop to deny Malick Thiaw his first goal for Newcastle United. However, Vicario’s understudy did not enjoy a particularly good outing as the game progressed, and was at fault for one of Newcastle’s two goals.

On the other hand, the Lilywhites were left frustrated with the match officials for not allowing Djed Spence to return to his position after the England international was done adjusting his boot. His absence in the box proved costly as Fabian Schar rose high and slotted the ball in from a Sandro Tonali cross.
