Bruno Guimaraes applauded referee Chris Kavanagh for inadvertently stopping a Tottenham Hotspur counterattack against Newcastle United during the final minutes of their Carabao Cup fourth-round tie at St. James' Park.

Goals from Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade had the hosts ahead approaching added time, but Spurs were still searching for a strike to halve the deficit. Randal Kolo Muani led their latest attack in the 89th minute, receiving the ball deep inside Tottenham's half from Djed Spence.

The forward played a one-two with Pape Matar Sarr, the first pass nutmegging Guimaraes, who was pressing to regain possession. Kolo Muani then dribbled into the space vacated by the Newcastle captain, beating Joelinton just past the halfway line.

However, the summer signing could not get past Kavanagh, with the ball clipping his heels, forcing the referee to blow his whistle and stop play. "Just as he was building up a head of steam, it flicked off the heels of Chris Kavanagh," Sky Sports commentator Bill Leslie said.
