Newcastle United could be looking at a 10-year wait to build a new stadium, but face taking a big hit in profits and gate receipts if the agonising delay goes on that long.

What Toon chiefs do know, after the results of a feasibility study became clear, is that they can expand their current St James' Park home if they so please. That would take some major reconstruction at the Gallowgate End, not to mention significant cost.

However, sources close to the club believe that a capacity of over 60,000 could still be achieved, compared to the 70,000 that a new ground could deliver. Toon chiefs had their eyes open back in March when a crowd of 300,000 turned up to see the Magpies parade the Carabao Cup after their victory against Liverpool.

After corporate facilities, the training ground and areas of St James' Park have been upgraded since the takeover, what price adding more seats now to ensure ticket sales continue to flourish?
