The inherently unexpected nature of youth player development makes it always difficult when planning for the season. And there's perhaps one lament that has been too often heard around the Academy for Liverpool in recent years.

Whether through injury, loan spells or international call-ups, the lack of availability of recognised strikers has regularly hampered the cause of both the under-21 and U18s teams.

The U21s have already seen that trend continue this term with both Jayden Danns and summer signing Will Wright sidelined by significant fitness issues.

That, though, has provided opportunities for others. And there was further evidence they are being eagerly grasped during a lively weekend for the Academy teams.
