Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has offered an update on injured defender Sven Botman after he was forced off at St James' Park today.

The Magpies' 2-1 win over Fulham put Howe's side on 12 points in the Premier League and rounded off a fantastic week after seeing off Benfica in the Champions League but Botman's injury had the Toon bench concerned.

Speaking after the slender but sweet victory over the Cottagers, Howe said: "I think he's OK. There's no concussion, it was a cut, but a very good recommendation from the on-field physio to take him off."

And Howe spoke about the importance of having a ready made replacement in Fabian Schar, he said: "I thought it was important for Fabby to come and do well. Difficult moment for him.

"He's been an ever-present near enough since I've been here. Obviously the challenge is greater this season with the arrival of Malick and Sven's form and Dan's form. For all the defenders to step up and play is not easy...
