Toulouse FC’s Charlie Cresswell has used Leeds United and Millwall fans as examples to heap praise on French football supporters.

The centre-back graduated from Leeds United’s academy and spent four years with their first team between 2020 and 2024. The Whites sent him on loan to Millwall during the 2022/23 season.

Cresswell ended his time at Leeds United in July 2024, when he joined the Ligue 1 side. He’s been speaking about the cultural difference in how fans support their clubs in England and France, and Foot en France have relayed his comments.

The former Leeds United and Millwall defender has been surprised by the ‘intensity and organisation’, especially of the French ultras.

“In France, the fans are fantastic. We don’t have that in England, ‘crazy’ fans. They’re jumping around all over the place throughout the match,” he said.

“There are ultras standing up front in the stands with microphones, directing the other supporters, it’s really crazy!”

He hasn’t experienced a similar situation during his time at Leeds United and Millwall, likely because whilst passionate there’s not an effort of strict coordination.
