Newcastle United are on track to secure a huge Champions League windfall, following the dramatic 3-0 thrashing of Benfica on Tuesday evening.

Eddie Howe's Magpies looked cool and composed at St James' Park, with Anthony Gordon opening the scoring in the first-half, before Harvey Barnes secured a brace in the latter stages of the fixture to seal the deal for the hosts.

As a result of the win, United now sit seventh in the European competition's standings, courtesy of a 4-0 thumping of Union Saint-Gilloise at the turn of the month, and a slender 2-1 loss to Barcelona in September.

But regardless of where the Magpies finish in the tournament this term, they are set for a major payday. As a result of making it to the league phase of the competition, Newcastle receive a £16.1million payment. On top of that, they have earned an extra £3.6m in the competition to date, as a result of their two wins.
