Kevin Muscat will not be the new Rangers manager.

The Shanghai Port boss had been the leading contender to replace Russell Martin at Ibrox.

However, he is not in line to move to Rangers after a deal fell at an advanced stage.

Muscat had agreed a deal in principle with Rangers to pay a seven-figure compensation fee to Shanghai Port but the agreement could not be finalised.

It's understood the twist comes after discussions with the Ibrox hierarchy.

Rangers are still aiming to make an appointment in the coming days but it will not be Muscat, who will continue to lead Port in his quest to win the Chinese Super League.
