Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has withdrawn from the running to return to Rangers following the dismissal of Russell Martin. The 45-year-old had been the frontrunner to become the Scottish giants' new manager.

Martin was axed earlier this week after a disappointing start to the campaign. Gerrard, by contrast, achieved remarkable success during his initial tenure with the club, breaking their decade-long drought for a Scottish top-flight championship.

However, Sky Sports have now confirmed that Gerrard has withdrawn himself from the process to become Martin's replacement. It's understood that both parties conducted 'positive' discussions regarding the position, though Gerrard believed the timing wasn't quite suitable for a return at this juncture.
