David Moyes believes James Garner has “stepped up” as he continued his good start to the season with a positive display against West Ham.

The midfielder provided the assist for Michael Keane’s goal and tested Alphonse Areola several times in a combative performance that also brought his defensive strengths to the fore. Garner was influential across the pitch and, after stressing his desire to take a more senior role in the side, he once again showcased his importance to the team in the draw.

Speaking after the game, Moyes said: “I think he has taken much more responsibility, gaining confidence with his performances as well. He's been put in left back and right back in different games, because we've been short. But his overall play is much better. He wants to get on the ball, he wants to help make us play.”
