Arne Slot said the decision to leave Mohamed Salah on the bench in the 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain was down to Liverpool being "in survival mode" at the Parc des Princes.

Goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG a healthy advantage in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie.

After being dropped from the starting line-up, Salah was left as an unused substitute as Slot brought on young midfielder Trey Nyoni after introducing Andy Robertson, Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones and Alexander Isak, who was making his first appearance since December after a leg break, all at the same time.

The Liverpool head coach said the idea of keeping the score down ahead of next week's second leg at Anfield superseded the need to get back into the game itself on the night as Luis Enrique's side dominated.
