Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is set to recommend West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes as his successor at the Red Devils, according to The Sun.

Fernandes has had another standout season for United. He has scored eight goals and provided 16 assists in the Premier League and has been key to their Champions League pursuit.

The Portuguese sensation has another year left on his contract, with an option for 12 months, and The Sun claim his future with the Red Devils is uncertain in the long term.

United are prepared to spend £80 million on a marquee defensive midfielder this summer, but they could also pursue a secondary signing to bolster their options in the centre of the park.

The Sun report that Fernandes will recommend his compatriot Mateus as his possible successor, considering his versatility to operate as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder.

Mateus recently said that Fernandes is his ‘role model’. West Ham could be compelled to part ways with their £42m signing if they are relegated after posting record £104.2m losses last year.
