A man has been arrested in relation to a report of racist abuse Newcastle United v Sunderland derby.

A 45 year old male arrested today (Tuesday 1 April) on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

ITV News report that: ‘Northumbria Police said the man from the Gateshead area has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.’

Sunderland player Lutsharel Geertruida alleging that somebody, or more than one person, in the crowd had racially abused him.

The first time that a Premier League match has then been paused after an alleged incident such as this.

‘Today’s match between Newcastle United and Sunderland was temporarily paused during the second half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd, directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.
