The full-back is in the final months of his current deal, and admitted on Saturday that he would "love" to sign a new contract to remain a Southampton player.

As recently as two months ago, the chances of that happening seemed slim. The 28 year old was on loan at Charlton, having been replaced in the summer.

Yet, an injury to Mads Roerslev, who is ruled out of the season, opened the door for Bree to be reintegrated into the side following the conclusion of his spell at Charlton.

The former Luton defender has been a revelation in defence since making a surprise return to the starting lineup in the south coast derby against Portsmouth.

It was Bree who booked Southampton's place in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday when he popped up with a header to beat Leicester 2-1 in extra time.
