Yesterday, a story emerged claiming that Nuno Espírito Santo can be dismissed without compensation if West Ham United are relegated to the Championship.

The report came via The Athletic, who were busy outlining West Ham’s transfer near-misses before dropping the bombshell about Nuno’s contract.

So earlier today, Claret & Hugh checked directly with a source who has a clear line into the inner workings at the London Stadium. When asked whether Nuno could indeed be sacked without a payoff, the response was blunt:

“Yes, that’s true.”

We were also told by the same source that the reported £27 million bid for Eddie Nketiah was accurate.

A Logical Clause

On Nuno’s situation, I suppose it makes sense. A manager appointed specifically to keep West Ham in the Premier League should hardly be rewarded financially if he fails in that task.

That said, when you consider the board’s managerial decision-making since David Moyes left the club, it does make you pause.

If the worst happens… who exactly would Sullivan & co pick to lead a promotion push?

That thought alone is enough to make any West Ham fan shudder.
