Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade has revealed the 'special' reaction of Magpies supporters towards him in the aftermath of last month's derby defeat to Sunderland has convinced him he is 'in the right place'.

Woltemade's own goal unfortunately proved to be the difference as Sunderland ran out 1-0 winners after the German international forward headed the ball beyond Aaron Ramsdale.

The 23-year-old has admitted he is still devastated about the manner of Newcastle's defeat but the messages he received from supporters in the immediate aftermath of the game on Wearside gave him a huge boost.

Opening up on that day, Woltemade has described the support from Newcastle fans as 'not normal' and not the reaction he was expecting.

"When I scored the own goal, I didn't know how people would react because of course it's the most important game for the fans," Woltemade told Newcastle's matchday programme ahead of their Premier League match against Leeds United.
