Newcastle United sunk without a trace at the London Stadium despite taking the lead against relegation haunted West Ham United, who ran out 3-1 winners.

Newcastle went ahead after a tidy pass from Bruno Guimaraes slotted in Jacob Murphy who thumped home after some fine play down the right. But West Ham equalised when Lucas Paqueta swept home on 35 minutes before Sven Botman put the ball through his own goal after a clanger from the Dutchman.

Howe got ruthless during the break and hauled off Anthony Gordon, Emil Krafth and Nick Woltemade. But despite making numerous changes to personnel and his tactics, Newcastle spluttered to defeat on a day when West Ham could not believe their luck. Tomas Soucek sealed the 3-1 win for the home side deep into injury time.
