Unai Emery has revealed that Matty Cash received offers to leave Aston Villa, but he chose to continue his development at the club by signing a new long-term deal.

The right-back has committed to a contract until 2029, with the option for an additional 12 months, as a reward for his strong start to the season.

During the summer, Nottingham Forest were among the teams interested in Cash, but Villa were unwilling to sell.

Having joined Villa in the summer of 2020 from Forest, Cash has made a total of 193 appearances in claret and blue.

As Cash himself has admitted, there have been highs and lows during his time at the club. Ahead of Villa’s trip to Liverpool, Emery was asked about the right-back’s progress and how he has responded to doubters.

“We are professional, and we have to respect it [criticism], and then get balance. Cash is a very sensitive player, and usually shows emotions deeply, or clearly,” the Villa boss explained.
