Eddie Howe has wanted to foster an environment at Newcastle this season where his whole squad buy into rotation and greater competition for places.

As Newcastle continue to compete in the Premier League, Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup, having a big squad to pick from and being able to manage his players' workload has been key to their success.

The Magpies are still scarred from their first Champions League experience two years ago where an unprecedented injury situation left Howe's side with just 12 outfield senior players available for selection for a number of weeks in December.

Lessons have clearly been learned since then and some good summer recruitment saw the club's squad depth improve so much that Newcastle were able to make eight changes to their starting XI on Wednesday and still beat Spurs 2-0 in the Carabao Cup.
