Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer has confirmed his decision to retire from professional football at the age of 33.

The goalkeeper had been without a club since the end of last season, after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Peterborough United.

Steer spent 10 years as a Villa player, and fans had the chance to pay tribute to him at Villa Park during the final Premier League game of the 2022/23 season against Brighton. He had been the club’s longest-serving player, having joined Villa from Norwich City in 2013.

During his time at the club, Steer made 36 appearances for Villa, 19 of which came in the 2018/19 campaign when he played a key role in helping the team win promotion to the Premier League. He was instrumental in the club’s record-breaking run of 10 consecutive league wins that season.

Steer’s contribution proved crucial in the play-off semi-final against West Bromwich Albion, where he saved two penalties in the decisive shoot-out victory.
