Bayer Leverkusen defender Alex Grimaldo has insisted he doesn’t understand criticism of Darwin Nunez’s time at Liverpool.

The full-back has been speaking to After de Post United, relayed by El Universo, about the former Liverpool striker.

He played alongside Nunez at Benfica before they both went their separate ways. Nunez joined Liverpool in an €85m move in 2022.

He arrived at Anfield with a big reputation following his time in Portugal. He scored 48 goals in 85 games for Benfica before his departure.

There was hope he would compete with Erling Haaland at Manchester City. That, though, proved to be a non-contest. While Haaland has broken records left, right and centre, Nunez managed a tally of 40 goals in 143 games for Liverpool before leaving for Al-Hilal this summer.

His time at Liverpool was full of criticism, with him eventually falling out of favour under Jurgen Klopp and his replacement Arne Slot.

He very much failed to live up to the standards that had been expected, particularly given the €85m that was paid for him. It was that which led to his departure this summer. Liverpool eventually replaced him with Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.
