Newcastle United are not exactly short of a centre-back at the moment but a long-term target could be available for a bargain fee come January.

United signed Malick Thiaw from AC Milan in the summer for what now seems like a great fee of £34.3m given his flying start. With Sven Botman, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles all in the fight for spots at centre-half signing another defender is hardly the priority.

But what if that defender happens to be Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace? Newcastle's interest in the England star is well documented, and Eddie Howe remains a big fan of the Eagles skipper.

The Magpies went as far as £70m for Guehi in summer 2024 but Steve Parish wanted more. Liverpool thought they had a £35m offer in the bag on deadline day only for an 11th hour transfer deadline day twist to spoil their plans.
